The original Royal Bohemian Association was originally created in
1897 in the Montmartre district in the Latin Quarter of Paris. It was formed
by a group of artistic types who shared Bohemian values.
We have two newspaper articles regarding this association.
- Sept. 26th 1897 (Small,
Large)
- Sept. 29th 1897 (Small,
Large)
There were 14 rules all members must follow to be a member, here are
the 10 that we have been able to dig up:
1. Must prize absinthe, women, wine, tobacco, work, and clean linen above all
else.
2. Must have been near starvation at least once in the last 5 years.
3. Must owe back rent to at least two landlords.
4. Must be educated.
5. Must vow to insult and fight any man whom you believe to be a scoundrel or a
fool.
6. Must never accept decoration from government.
7. Must have plausible connections to literary or artistic culture.
8. Must have a reputation as a favorable companion.
9. Must despise materialistic and uncultured people.
10. Must prove yourself to be nonconforming.
Items 11-14 have sadly been lost to time.
The NEW Royal Bohemian Association is open to all who agree to
meet the following 11 criterion:
1. Must
prize absinthe, love, and creativity above all else.
2. Must understand and emphasize with those who have been near starvation.
3. Must believe that money is not a reason to live, but merely the means.
4. Must prize education, structured or otherwise.
5. Must vow to insult or fight anyone whom you believe to be a scoundrel.
6. Must question authority, and never blindly follow any government.
7. Must maintain a serious connection with literary or artistic culture.
8. Must have a reputation as a true friend and enjoyable companion.
9. Must despise materialistic and bigoted people.
10. Must aspire to nonconform.
11. Must never disparage absinthe merely by it's country of origin, but always
by it's quality.
